by Dan-N on June 10, 2009

piratesI have no problem with patches – they really make a pirate… well a pirate. The problem comes when supplement companies try to sell products such as the Acai Patch or the Weight Loss Patch or the Cure Everything that is wrong with you patch.

On paper, the idea of a transdermal patch for dietary supplements seems to make sense. A patch can allow the ingredients to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream and bypass the digestive system.

There is just one tiny problem with making a Dietary Supplement in patch form, there is no such thing as a dietary supplement in patch form!

Remember that boring post defining Dietary Supplements…

In our article on the FDA definition of Dietary Supplements we explained that for something to be consider a dietary supplement it must be ingested. As the FDA states:

In addition, only products that are intended for ingestion may be lawfully marketed as dietary supplements. Topical products and products intended to enter the body directly through the skin or mucosal tissues, such as transdermal or sublingual products, are not dietary supplements.

Supplement Secrets Exposed

The Secret is out – A Dietary Supplement can NOT be a patch.
