Ingredients You Can Pronounce...
Pick a protein bar and try to make sense (or even pronounce) the long list ingredients in each bar.
What is natural? What is artificial? What is harmful? Who Knows! Most protein bar
manufacturers are hoping you never bother to read the ingredient list.
Maplewood Bake Company, the makers of Fred's Incredible Muffins, takes a very different approach.
They want you to read every ingredient and understand why they choose to put the ingredient in the muffins.
If you have not already done so, click here to read the Nutrition Facts and Ingredients.
Below is more details on the key ingredients.
Just as important as what's in the muffins is what's NOT in them:
- NO genetically modified ingredients
- NO added sugar
- NO artificial sweeteners
- NO artificial flavors
- NO artificial colors
- NO hydrogenated oils
- NO Trans Fats
- NO preservatives
- NO fake foods
- NO empty calories
Here's why we chose the key ingredients in our muffins.
Pumpkin
Steven Pratt M.D. author of Super Foods RX says “Pumpkin is one of the most nutritionally valuable
foods known to man, it is high in fiber and low in calories, pumpkin is a nutritional superstar…the
nutrients in pumpkin are really world class."
Pumpkin is also very rich in vitamin A Carotenoids, both Beta Carotenes and Alpha Carotenes. Beta
Carotene is a well researched and powerful antioxidant. Dr. Pratt also believes that Alpha
Carotene may slow down the aging process.
Wild Blueberries
Researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Center (HNRCA) have found that blueberries rank #1 in
antioxidant activity when compared to 40 other fresh fruits and vegetables. Blueberries are also
known for their anti inflammatory abilities. As the cover story in the 2/23/04 issue of Time
Magazine explained "inflammation has been linked to heart attacks, cancer, AIDS, arthritis,
and Alzheimer’s." Of course just eating blueberries is not going to cure, prevent or treat
any disease, but anything that may help reduce inflammation is of primary
concern to your health.
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has been conducting animal studies on the effects of
blueberries and aging. "The exciting finding from this study is the potential reversal of
some age-related impairments in both memory and motor coordination, especially with
blueberry supplements," said Molly Wagtster, PhD, a Health Scientist Administrator with the
NIA's Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program.
Did we mention that we also like blueberries because they taste delicious?
Oat Fiber
Experts believe the soluble fiber (such as oat fiber) called beta glucan help promote healthy
levels of blood cholesterol by binding to some of the cholesterol found in the
digestive tract. In 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration passed a unique ruling
that allowed oat bran to be registered as the first cholesterol-reducing food at an
amount providing 3 grams of beta-glucan per day. Fred’s Incredible Muffins have 2.5 grams of
oat fiber in just one muffin.
In addition to the healthy heart benefits of oat fiber, studies have shown that oat fiber
can keep your blood glucose levels from rising too fast after you eat. This benefit makes oat
fiber of special interest to diabetics.
Soy (Non GMO)
Soy protein is a vegetarian protein source that's rich in vitamins, minerals, soluble fiber,
plant-based omega-3 fatty acids and, most importantly, it provides a wealth of disease fighting
phytonutrients. In fact, soy is the richest known dietary source of phytoestrogens.
Research has shown that soy plays a positive role in helping to promote healthy cholesterol levels and relieve
menopausal and menstrual symptoms.
Whey Protein
Whey is the liquid left behind when cheese is made. It's often called the Gold Standard of
proteins because it has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid
scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than
other proteins. The two most significant proteins found in whey protein are beta-lactoglobulin
and alpha-lactalbumin. A double-blind study found that supplementing with alpha-lactalbumin helped
improve scores on a memory test in people who were vulnerable to stress-related problems.
Walnuts
Walnuts are an excellent source of plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, copper, folate
and Vitamin E. Walnuts are also rich in plant sterols which can play a significant role in
lowering serum cholesterol levels. If you are looking for antioxidants, walnuts are for you.
Walnuts rate higher than any other nut in terms of antioxidant levels.
Erythritol
I promised you all-natural, and although you may not have heard of this sweetener before, you
should be on the lookout for it on food labels, because it's the world's first all-natural
non-caloric sweetener. Unlike Splenda, it doesn't have rearranged molecules or added chlorine,
and it has a carb count of nearly zero while tasting very much like sugar. Technically it's a
sugar alcohol, but because it's so rapidly absorbed and rapidly eliminated, within 24 hours,
the laxative and gastric upset side effects sometimes associated with sugar alcohols are
unlikely to occur.
This is the wholesome sugar substitute of the future, and you don't have to worry that it will
have the adverse effects of artificial sweeteners, or their bitter aftertaste.
