How does Perfect ResGrape Resveratrolcompare to other Resveratrol Supplements?
We understand that there are a large number of Resveratrol supplements on the market, and of course all claim to be the best and most
effective. In this article we will examine how Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol compares
to the other Resveratrol supplements on the market.
Is There Really A Big Difference between Resveratrol Supplements?
Yes! The difference in quality and effectiveness of Resveratrol Supplements can be incredible! Are you getting Trans-Resveratrol or Cis-Resveratrol? If it is Trans-Resveratrol, what is the purity level? Are there
fillers and flowing agents mixed in with your Resveratrol? These are just some of the questions you need to ask in order to see
the differences between Resveratrol supplements. We strongly recommend you start by reading our article -
Resveratrol Supplements - Stepping Through the Minefield, this will give you all
the information you need to make sense of a Resveratrol supplement label.
How Do I Compare Perfect ResGrape to Resveratrol Supplement X?
Very carefully! First, there is no Resveratrol Supplement X - just a generic term we will use to represent some of the
other resveratrol supplements on the market. The best place to start any comparison is with the Supplement Facts panel. The FDA
requires all supplements to have this information, so it is a good way to compare supplements on a factual level without all the
Here is the Supplement Fact Panel for Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol...
Let's go over the facts we learn from this label:
- We find out there are 30 servings per container.
- Each serving has 200mg of 99% Trans-Resveratrol and 1,000mg of Muscadine Grape Whole Food
- No other ingredients are added - no fillers, flowing agents or anything else (besides the vegetable capsule)
- It is an All Natural Product that uses NO animal products
You then want to take Resveratrol Supplement X and do the same analysis of the Supplement Fact Panel. You want to be able to answer the
following questions to do a fair comparison:
As we did this comparison with all the Resveratrol Supplements on the market, nothing could really compare to the
Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol. If you find a product that can compare, please
drop us a line.
- How Many Servings Per Bottle?
- How Much 99% Trans-Resveratrol Per Serving?
- How Much Whole Food Muscadine Grape Per Serving?
- Are There Other Ingredients Added That Do Not Provide Benefit?
What about Supplements that Just Have Resveratrol - How do They Compare?
A supplement that just contains 99% Trans-Resveratrol, with no fillers or flowing agents, is a good choice. To be honest, before we
found the Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol, we were looking at pure 99% Trans-Resveratrol Supplements, much in the same way we like
pure Acai products.
As we continued to research Resveratrol we came across more and more information about all the other healthy polyphenols in red grapes,
muscadines and red wine. Do a search at PubMed.Gov and you will find...
- Over 2,300 studies on Red Wine
- Over 700 studies on Grape Seed
- Over 550 studies on Red Grapes
In addition, we kept coming back to research on the the French Paradox - how the French eat a high fat diet, smoke and somehow have a very low rate of
heart disease. The French drink red wine, and while resveratrol is certainly part of the answer, it is safe to assume that the thousands
of other polyphenols in red grapes also play a significant role.
It became clear to us that while a Pure 99% Trans-Resveratrol supplement would be good, a 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol Supplement with the
addition of all the other antioxidants and nutrients found in grapes would be even better!
How Does Perfect ResGrape Compare to Supplements that Have Trans-Resveratrol and Red Wine or Red Grape Extracts?
As we just discussed, we love the nutrients found in red grapes and red wines. But, what could be even better than red grapes? How about a
grape that had all the nutrients of red grapes, PLUS, 6 times the resveratrol, 40 times the antioxidants, ellagic acid and more fiber
than oat brand? Of course that grape is the Muscadine Grape (read all about Muscadine Grapes here).
So, a Resveratrol Supplement that had 99% Trans-Resveratrol and Red Grape Extract would be good, the Perfect ResGrape with 99% Trans-Resveratrol and
1,000mg of Whole Muscadine Grape is even better. Remember, the muscadine grape has all the nutrients and benefits of red grapes plus the
ellagic acid, fiber and extra antioxidants and resveratrol (we discuss the health benefits of muscadines here).
The Muscadine Grape and Resveratrol also have an powerful synergy as demonstrated by the National Institute of Health (NIH) study on Muscadine
Grapes and Prostrate Cancer. We discuss the study in our Muscadine Health
Benefits article, but here are some quick highlights...
"Using a series of human prostate cancer cells, representing different stages of prostate cancer progression,
the researchers showed that Muscadine Skin Extract (MSKE) significantly inhibits the growth of cancerous, but
not normal, prostate cells, primarily by inducing a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
Programmed cell death is one of the mechanisms the body uses to rid itself of cells with
unrepaired genetic damage before those cells can duplicate themselves. In contrast, resveratrol
seems to act by blocking the cell cycle, a sequence of steps that a cell passes
through when it grows and divides into two identical cells. Both mechanisms are
used by the body to prevent the development of cancer."
- National Institute of Health, 9/1/2007, Unique Grape Skin Extract Inhibits Prostate Cancer Cell Growth in the Laboratory
The study shows that Muscadine and Resveratrol work in different ways to fight the prostate cancer cells. A clear example of the whole
being greater than the sum of its parts.
I am Looking at a Supplement that Has a Proprietary Blend of Resveratrol - How Does that Compare?
We have a very simple rule - stay away from products that use proprietary blends. If you are going to ingest something, you have
every right to know exactly what is in the supplement.
We have seen things like "1000mg Resveratrol Rejuvenate proprietary Blend". The blend might have 10 ingredients, one of which is
resveratrol. The problem is you have no way of knowing how much of that 1,000mg is Resveratrol! If a company wants to include
other ingredients, that is fine, they should list them separately on the label. The Perfect ResGrape tells you exactly how much
Trans-Resveratrol there is and how much Muscadine Grape there is - nothing is hidden.
I Have Seen Supplements with a Higher Dosage of Resveratrol - Does that Make them Better than Perfect ResGrape?
We hate to labor on the same point but, first you want to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Perfect ResGrape has 200mg of 99%
Trans-Resveratrol per serving. So, you first need to make sure your Supplement X actually has more than 200mg of 99% Trans-Resveratrol. For the sake
of argument, let's assume Supplement X does have more than 200mg of 99% Trans-Resveratrol - does that make it better?
More of something is not necessarily better. The correct dosage of Resveratrol is one of the most debated issues among experts. The problem is most of
the studies with resveratrol were done with mice and other animals and it can be hard to accurately calculate an equivalent human
dosage. Studies have put the correct dosage of Trans-Resveratrol anywhere from 20mg - 500mg per day. Let's take a look at some of the research -
"In the studies conducted by BioMarker Pharmaceuticals, mice demonstrated favorable anti-aging gene-expression
changes in response to receiving the human equivalent of 20 mg of resveratrol a day."
-Dr. Xi Zhao-Wilson, PhD, "What Dose of Resveratrol Should Humans Take?", Life Extension Magazine, March 2007
"Resveratrol, at doses that can be readily achieved in humans, fulfills the definition of a
dietary compound that mimics some aspects of Calorie Restriction." [4.9mg per Kilo a day were used]
- A Low Dose of Dietary Resveratrol Partially Mimics Caloric Restriction and Retards Aging Parameters in Mice, Plos One, June 2008
So, while the original Harvard Study on Resveratrol used a megadose (22mg per kilo) - more recent studies have shown that a lower dosage
can still have powerful benefits. The above studies would put the dosage for humans in the 20 - 400mg range.
So Why Does the Perfect ResGrape Only Have 200mg of Trans-Resveratrol?
It is important to remember the Perfect ResGrape has another important ingredient - 1,000mg of Muscadine Grape. Since you are receiving
all the polyphenols from the muscadine grapes, you do not need as much resveratrol.
To make this more clear, let's think about the French Paradox. The low rate of heart disease in France is believed to be due to their
high consumption of red wine. If it was only resveratrol that was responsible for the low rate of heart disease in France, then it would be
as simple as taking a pill that had the same resveratrol as in a few glasses of red wine.
Let's look at some numbers...
As no study has ever shown that taking 1.44mg of Resveratrol a day can lower your risk of heart disease, there must be other important nutrients
in the red wine the French are drinking! Clearly, there are health benefits from all the other nutrients that are found in red grapes
(and of course also in muscadine grapes). For this reason, just comparing resveratrol dosage between various supplements does not provide
a complete answer. You also want to compare how much of the other polyphenols from the grapes they are delivering.
- 1 Fluid Ounce of Red Wine Has 90 Micrograms of Resveratrol
- There are 1,000 micrograms in 1 milligram
- An Average Wine Glass holds 5.3 ounces
- Let's assume the French like their wine and have 3 glasses a day (16 ounces)
- 3 Glasses of Red Wine Would Deliver Just 1.44 mg (milligrams) of Resveratrol
There will always be debate on the correct resveratrol dosage - and there probably is no one correct answer. However, we do
believe that the Perfect ResGrape with its 200mg of 99% Trans-Resveratrol and 1,000mg of Muscadine Grape, delivers nutrients and in turn
health benefits well beyond Resveratrol supplements that just contain 400mg of Resveratrol and small amounts or no muscadine grapes.
What about the stability of Resveratrol? Other Products Claimed to Have a More Stable Resveratrol?
Welcome to the fun world of supplement marketing - take a simple process, make it super complicated and then claim to be the only one who
can figure out the problem you created! The whole idea of resveratrol not being stable is just a marketing myth. Let's simply go to the
"Plant extracts containing phytopolyphenols, including resveratrol, are extensively used as nutraceutical supplements.
Recent reports allege their lack of stability at ambient conditions. We have studied the stability of
resveratrol and its glycon piceid in a mixture with a whole grape extract for 2 years (long-term stability)
under Good Manufacturing Practice pharmaceutical protocols (at 60% humidity and 25 degrees C). The neat
compounds were followed for 4 years under conditions of "accelerated stability," at 75% humidity and
40 degrees C, all in the presence of ambient air. Chromatographic analysis did not detect any
instability, thus disproving the claims to the opposite. No storage precautions are necessary
for these nutritional supplements."
- "Resveratrol and its glycon piceid are stable polyphenols", J Med Food. 2006 Spring;9(1):11-4.
We couldn't have said it better ourselves! So, let's just put an end to this myth about resveratrol and lack of stability -
the science clearly shows that resveratrol in supplement form is stable without any special packaging or encapsulation!
Why is Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol So Expensive?
We have had people ask us why Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol is more expensive than other Resveratrol supplements. They point out that the price
per gram of Trans-Resveratrol in the Perfect ResGrape is higher than another Resveratrol Supplement. This is a good start to a comparison, but
unless you also factor in that you are getting 1,000mg of Muscadine Grape in each serving, it is a flawed comparison.
The Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol really is two supplements in one bottle. Shop around and see what a Muscadine Grape Supplement with
1,000mg per serving and 30 servings in a bottle costs. Make sure you are looking at a muscadine supplement that uses the whole grape and has
not been sprayed with pesticides. Then price out a 99% Pure Trans-Resveratrol Supplement with 200mg per serving, 30 servings in a bottle and
no fillers or flowing agents. Once you do this comparison you will see the Perfect ResGrape is very reasonably priced.
Why is Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol So Inexpensive?
Yes, we get this question too. What's funny is sometimes we get someone calling asking why it is expensive and then 5 minutes later
someone calls to ask how it could be so inexpensive! We believe this all just points to the confusion over how to compare resveratrol supplements.
The Perfect ResGrape Resveratrol is less expensive than buying a Trans-Resveratrol supplement and a Muscadine supplement because it is
much less expensive to produce one supplement (one bottle, one label, etc). While the Perfect ResGrape is priced very reasonable, it is still
made with only the highest quality ingredients.
Is There Anything Else I Should Look for When Comparing Resveratrol Supplements?
Yes. We have talked a lot about what we like about the actual Perfect ResGrape supplement, but you also need to check on the company
behind the supplement.
Here is what we like about Perfect Supplements, the company that makes Perfect ResGrape:
When comparing Perfect ResGrape to Supplement X, make sure you compare the companies behind the supplements as well.
